Open MaaS

The future of mobility is smarter, more sustainable, inclusive and open

What is MaaS?

In plain English, Mobility as a Service, or MaaS for short, is a type of service that enables users to plan, book and pay for multiple types of mobility services through a seamless digital channel. The concept shifts away from consumer-owned modes of transportation and towards mobility provided as a service.

The key concept behind MaaS is to offer travellers the best-value proposition in terms of mobility solutions, based on their actual mobility needs. This is enabled by combining transportation services from public and private transportation providers through a unified gateway that creates and manages the trip, which users can pay for with a single account.  At the base of the concept is communication and data exchange between the various mobility operators.

From MaaS to Open MaaS

To fulfil all its promises, MaaS needs to evolve into Open MaaS. This openness must exist on several levels.

  1. First of all, there’s a need for openness in terms of multimodal mobility. Open MaaS requires a platform that’s open to all means of transport, both public and private.
  2. It also needs to be truly open in the way it can be used: not just offering a single ticket for a journey that includes using different mobility modes – such as train, metro and shared bike – but also open in the way the user is charged.
  3. Open MaaS encourages the citizen to make the transition towards greener mobility.
  4. Last but not least, Open MaaS offers the opportunity to make mobility truly inclusive and accessible for every citizen.
